Row 7, Plot 22, LOWE, Handy Kite


Handy Kite was 73 years old when he died.  He was reared and educated in Grant County, Arkansas, the son of James Andrew and Marggarret Louise Reed Lowe. 

He was a prominent planter.  He was a member of the Methodist Church since he was 15 years old and a Woodman of the World member.  He was engaged in farming for a number of years and was a pioneer in the cattle raising industry.  

He was married on Thanksgiving Day in 1895 to the former Elizabeth "Lizzie" M. Clement.  After her death in 1909 Handy married Josephine Holloway who died in 1939.

At the time of his death he was living with his daughter Minnie Morrow at Sulphur Springs.

Funeral services were held at Clement Cemetery by Robinsons Funeral Home with Rev. M. E. Scott and Oliver Sharp officiating.  Active pallbearers were John Burns, Homer Koonce, Clifton Koonce, Kirby Ashcraft, Robert Ashcraft, Claud Willis, Jack Wilson, J.E. Green, J.T. Briley, F. A. Dial, Jeff Koonce, Vince Tuttle, Walter Ross, Readie Koonce, W. H. Simpson, George R. Holt, Rufe Butler, Lee Bobbitt, Charlie Henderson, B. Cooper, Jake Wilson, Gus Ross, Martin O'Connell, J.H. Bryant, J. O. Lowman, Gus Petty,  Ben Watspm. Walter Cary, J.H. Appling, W. J. Reynolds, Sam Ivy, Everett Thomas, Carroll Baxter, Roose Ramick, O.J. Ramick, Vernon Hope and George Reynolds.  

(His son, A. Garland Lowe, 69 of Farmington, New Mexico died at San Juan Hospital.  A native of Grant Co.,  he attended school at Lamont and was manager of the meat department of Holloway Grocery at Pine Bluff.  He had been a resident of Farmington for 28 years.  He was a Methodist.  He was married to Verna Simpson Lowe.  They had two sons A. Garland Lowe, Jr. and James H. Lowe and a daughter, Mrs. Glen Issacson.  His funeral services were at Farmington with burial at Greenlawn Cemeter.  A memorial service was held at Carr Memorial Methodist Church at Pine Bluff by Rev. Edgar Outlaw.

Garland's son, James Hawley Lowe 63, of Sheridan died at St. Vincent's Infirmary after a lengthy illness.  He was a grocer.  He was a member of Sheridan Masonic Lodge 260, Sahara Shrine Temle and was a Scottish Rites Mason.  He was a member of Sheridan Methodist Church.  He was married to Alene Koon on Nov 23, 1927 at Pine Bluff.  They had one daughter Anna Marie Lowe Gwin.  
Funeral services were at the church by Ralph Robinson and Son Mortuary with Rev. Paul Stevenson and Joe E. Hunter officiating.  Burial with Masonic rites were at Lost Creek Cemetery at Sheridan.  Pallbearers were Bruce Gwin, Bruce Gartman, Harold Rhodes, Norman Wright, Ed Hulse, Gayle Gwin, Gilbert Reynolds and Herbert McCool.  

Hawley's wife Alene Koon Lowe died at Trinity Village Medical Center at Pine Bluff.  She was the daughter of Charles Franklin and Willie Eolene Johnson Koon.  She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1924.  She attended the Missionary Baptist College at Sheridan and Arkansas State Teachers' College at Conway.  She was a member of Lakeside united Methodist Church and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.  Her funeral was held at Buie Funeral Home with Rev. Lynn Dyke officiated.  She is buried at Lost Creek.
